June 18, 2009

The following is a list of moderate price restaurants in Olinda:

Oficina do Sabor (Regional) Considered a “must” by most tourists, this restaurant specializes in exotic seafood dishes served in a pumpkin. Most dishes can be shared between two people, making it just about affordable for travellers on a budget. Get there early for a good table with a great view of Recife.  Rua do Amparo 335. (81) 3429 3331.  Tues-Sat 12-4pm and 6.00pm -midnight; Sun 12-5pm, Mon closed. Approx. R$30 per person excluding drinks if sharing a main dishMAP

Mourisco (Regional). Established in 1970 this restaurant is in one of the oldest residences in Olinda. The best tables are in the front room, overlooking the square. The menu includes traditional Brazilian dishes like galinha cabidela or galinha molho pardo. Both terms are used to describe chicken cooked in its own blood to make a rich sauce, much better tasting than it sounds! Other menu choices include camarão Mourisco, shrimp and fish of the day, often cooked in a rich coconut sauce. Paça Conselheiro João Alfredo, 7.  (81) 3249 1390.  Daily 12-3pm & 7-11pm.  Approx R$50.
