Calhetas (49km South of Recife)
Calhetas is a short trip from Recife by car, but it is not accessible by public transport. For this reason, it is a very popular one-day destination for middle class people from Recife. Those relying on public transport go to nearby Gaibu beach. Calhetas is also quite popular with the gay and lesbian community, especially on weekends.
Because it is such a picturesque little bay that attracts a good number of wealthier visitors, it has a quite good infrastructure and above average restaurants serving good quality fresh seafood, but it is not cheap. Backpackers be warned.
Either side of the rocky outcrop are nice bays that make for good swimming. The water is crystal clear and warm.
